COPPER-FREE ANTIFOULING PAINT FOR ALUMINUM BOATS

TotalBoat AlumiPaint AF is a copper-free bottom paint specifically formulated for aluminum hulls, pontoons, jon boats, outdrives, trim tabs, and other underwater metals. Powered by an organic biocide and zinc instead of cuprous oxide, AlumiPaint AF fights barnacles, slime, algae, and weeds without the galvanic corrosion concerns associated with traditional copper-based bottom paints. In addition, copper adds weight to finishes - AlumiPaint AF is lighter as a result  to help fuel efficiency and speed for your boat.

Suitable for recreational boats operating in freshwater, saltwater, and brackish waters, AlumiPaint AF keeps hulls & pontoons clean all season long. It's ideal for aluminum fishing boats, pontoon boats, workboats, and other vessels requiring copper-free antifoulings.

EASY APPLICATION FOR DIY BOATERS AND BOATYARDS

AlumiPaint AF is easy to apply on properly prepared and primed aluminum, iron, and steel hulls using a brush, roller, or spray equipment. A 3/16" nap solvent-safe roller provides even coverage on larger surfaces, while foam or chip brushes make it easy to coat waterlines, chines, strakes, and other detailed areas. Conventional and airless spray equipment can also be used for larger projects.

Depending on application conditions and equipment setup, this copper-free bottom paint can be thinned up to 10% using TotalBoat Brushing Thinner 100 or Spray Thinner 101. Enjoy excellent coverage and reliable protection that lasts all season.

FLEXIBLE LAUNCH SCHEDULES FOR SEASONAL BOATERS

AlumiPaint AF dries quickly. Depending on temperature and humidity, recoat in as little as 1.5 hours. For best results, apply between 50-90°F with humidity below 90%.

Not ready to launch once the paint dries? AlumiPaint AF features no maximum dry time before launch, letting you prep and paint ahead of schedule without losing antifouling effectiveness. This makes it a convenient option for seasonal maintenance projects and boaters who want to make the most of the season on the water.

  • Can AlumiPaint AF be used in all waters?

    AlumiPaint AF offers excellent protection against barnacles, slime, and algae in salt, fresh, and brackish water.

  • Does you need to prime aluminum boats before painting?

    AlumiPaint AF may be applied over existing paint in good condition. On bare aluminum, it is strongly recommended to prime first with Aluminum Boat Barrier Coat Epoxy Primer to improve adhesion. For iron and steel, prime first with TotalProtect Epoxy Barrier Coat Primer.

  • Can I apply AlumiPaint AF over old paint?

    If the hull has been previously painted and is in good conditon, AlumiPaint AF can be applied directly over after preparation (even if the existing paint is copper-based!). Reference our Antifouling Compatibility Chart for what works and how to best prep before painting. Do not apply over tin, vinyl, or Teflon bottom paints.

  • How should this boat bottom paint be applied?

    Apply 1-2 coats of AlumiPaint AF bottom paint with a 3/16" nap roller, foam and chip brushes, or airless and convention sprayers. An extra 1-2 coats are recommended over bare substrates, at the waterline, and other areas with increased wear, such as leading edges of rudders, skegs, or struts. If needed, thin up to 10% (12 oz. per gallon) with Brushing Thinner 100 (brush/roll application) or up to 5% with Spray Thinner 101 (sprayer application).

  • How much paint do I need to paint my aluminum boat?

    Our boat bottom paint calculator helps you estimate how much AlumiPaint AF you'll need for your project. One gallon typically covers 500 square feet and one quart covers 125 square feet.

  • How long does AlumiPaint AF take to dry?

    Depending on the temperature, AlumiPaint AF dries and is ready to overcoat at 1 hours (90ºF), 2 hours (70º), or 4 hours (50ºF).

  • How long after applying can I launch my boat?

    For best results, allow the antifouling paint to cure overnight before launching. Dry time to launch is 2 hours @ 90ºF, 4 hours @ 70ºF, and 8 hours @ 50ºF. There is no max dry time to launch, as the dual biocides remain active until the boat hits the water.

  • Can I use this paint above the waterline?

    Antifouling paint is to be used below the waterline only. It is not a general purpose marine paint. does not contain UV resistance, and is an ablative finish designed to wear away with use, constantly exposing fresh biocide.

  • What can I do to maximize antifouling performance?

    We recommend that the bottom of the boat be checked regularly to make sure it is clean and that no growth is accumulating. The self-cleaning nature of this coating is most effective when the boat is used periodically.
