With TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Paint, you can start painting sooner and finish faster because it bonds strongly to properly prepared substrates. It also dries extremely fast, so you can recoat without sanding in just 1 hour (@ 72°F). Apply 2-3 coats, wait 12 hours, sand before the final coat. For anglers, in case it matters to the fish – or at least you think it might – you can paint the bottom of your boat in fish-friendly colors like White, Light Gray, or Black, so they’ll think you’re nothing more than a harmless cloud drifting overhead. For duck hunters, it’s easy to paint a custom camo pattern using any combination of Khaki, Earth Brown, Flat Dark Earth, Olive Green and Army Green with stencils you create yourself or buy online. For maximum concealment, choose stencil patterns that mimic the foliage in your lake, creek mouth, or ocean setting. Just prep the boat as directed, then apply paint for one camo layer at a time. What can Aluminum Boat Topside Paint be used on?
It’s formulated for use inside and out on aluminum duck boats, jon boats, bass boats, pontoon boats, fishing boats, and canoes. It can also be used on masts, booms, and spreaders. This paint will also work on steel, fiberglass, and wood, with proper surface preparation. -
Can it be used for non-marine applications?
Yes, this paint works well on aluminum railings, outdoor furniture, mailboxes, and other exterior aluminum surfaces. -
Can this paint be used for antifouling protection?
While TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Paint can be used above or below the waterline, it contains no antifouling properties. We recommend TotalBoat AlumiPaint AF bottom paint for maximum protection against barnacles, shellfish, slime, and weeds. Do not apply over existing bottom paints! -
Can Aluminum Boat Topside Paint be used on stainless steel?
Steel should be sanded or ground to bare, shiny metal. For best results, sand the surface with 220-grit sandpaper, and remove all sanding residue. Wipe the surface clean with denatured alcohol or acetone using a clean, lint-free, cotton rag. Allow the surface to dry completely before painting. -
Can this paint be applied over wood that was sealed with two-part epoxy?
Yes, this can be used over epoxy sealed wood once the epoxy has fully cured. -
Is this a high-gloss paint?
Aluminum Boat Paint dries to a low sheen finish that hides imperfections. It is also easy to create a camo or natural concealment finish perfect for boats and dinghies used for hunting. -
How do I apply this paint?
Aluminum Boat Paint can be applied by brush, roller, or spray equipment. We recommend applying thebetween 50-90°F when weather and conditions will not affect the paint finish or proper drying. Prior to the final coat, wait at least 12 hours after applying, sand lightly with 320-grit sandpaper to remove any imperfections, and remove any sanding residue before applying the final coat. For more information, refer to the step-by-step instructions in the Technical Data Sheet. -
Do I need to etch and prime before using the Aluminum Topside Paint?
No, you do not. With TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Paint, etching is optional and may improve adhesion, but what’s most important is that this unique paint is designed to be applied directly to shiny, bare aluminum. It has an advanced polyurethane formula that makes it bond strongly and durably without etching or priming first. -
How do I prepare surfaces for application?
Surface prep is fast and easy for bare aluminum in good condition—just clean thoroughly to remove any dirt, oil, grease, or contaminants, then dry completely. If the bare aluminum has a dull, oxidized look, use 220-grit to sand until shiny, remove sanding residue, wipe with denatured alcohol or use TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Etch Wash as directed, and allow to dry completely before immediately applying TotalBoat Aluminum Boat Paint. -
How many coats do I need to apply?
We recommend applying 2-3 coats. -
What is the typical coverage of this paint?
The coverage of TotalBoat Aluminum Topside Paint is 350-400 sq ft/gal, or 85-100 square feet at 2-3 mils thickness dry. -
Can this paint be sprayed? Does it need to be thinned for spraying?
Yes. A large spray tip works best. This paint may be thinned up to 20% with water for spray application. A large foam roller also yields a finish similar to spraying. -
How long does Aluminum Boat Paint take to dry?
The dry time to overcoat is 1 hour at 72°F (no sanding is needed between build coats). Time to recoat without sanding is up to 12 hours after the previous coat. The dry time before use is a minimum of 48 hours for partial water submersion.
