COPPER-FREE ANTIFOULING PAINT WITH BRIGHT COLORS
TotalBoat Krypton is a copper-free ablative bottom paint that features a biodegradable organic biocide paired with zinc to prevent barnacles, slime, algae, and weeds while delivering brighter, more vibrant colors below the waterline. This paint is ideal for use in waters with strict environmental regulations or where the use of copper antifoulings is not permitted.
Krypton fights hard and soft growth on fiberglass, wood, steel, aluminum, cast iron, and on previously painted surfaces. Because it contains no copper, this antifouling paint is suitable for use on aluminum boats, pontoons, outdrives, trim tabs, and other underwater metals where traditional copper-based paints can cause galvanic corrosion.
Highly effective on recreational power and sailboats in most fouling conditions and all waters, Krypton’s ablative finish gradually wears away as the boat moves through the water to continuously expose fresh biocide for reliable single-season protection with reduced paint buildup while minimizing paint build-up.
EASY APPLICATION FOR DIY BOATERS AND PROFESSIONAL PAINTERS
Krypton delivers smooth, even coverage with dependable results. Apply by brush, roller, or spray to properly prepared bare or previously painted hulls. Use a 3/16"" nap solvent-safe roller for best coverage and a foam or chip brush for detail areas and tight spaces.
This bottom paint can be thinned up to 10% using TotalBoat Brushing Thinner 100 or Spray Thinner 101 depending on weather conditions and application method.
Not sure how much boat bottom paint you’ll need? Try our simple antifouling paint calculator to estimate how much you'll need to paint your boat.
FLEXIBLE LAUNCH WINDOWS FOR SEASONAL BOATERS
Depending on temperature and humidity, you can apply a second coat in as little as 1 hour. For best results, apply between 50-90°F with humidity below 90%.
Not launching immediately after painting? Unlike many antifouling paints with strict launch windows, Krypton features no maximum dry time before launch so you can prep and paint ahead of schedule without losing antifouling effectiveness.

FREQUENTLY ASKED QUESTIONS
-
What types of boats can copper-free antifouling paint be used on?
Krypton can be used on fiberglass, wood, primed steel, aluminum, and previously painted surfaces in good conditions. This single-season bottom paint offers superior performance on powerboats and sailboats that spend extended time moderate to severe fouling conditions -
Can I use this ablative paint on aluminum boats?
Yes. Because Krypton does not contain cuprous oxide (copper), it is safe for use on aluminum hulls, outdrives, trim tabs, and other underwater metals. -
Is this paint safe for all waters?
Krypton provides full-season protection in salt, fresh, and brackish waters -
Does I need to prime before applying Krypton?
Priming is only necessary on bare surfaces. On bare fiberglass, gelcoat, wood, steel, and iron, it is strongly recommended to prime first with TotalProtect Epoxy Barrier Coat Primer to help prevent water absorption and improve adhesion. For aluminum, prime first with Aluminum Boat Barrier Coat Epoxy Primer. -
Can I apply Krypton over existing paint?
Krypton is compatible with most existing hard and ablative antifouling paints in good condition. Always test compatibility and properly prepare the surface before recoating. Reference our Antifouling Compatibility Chart for what works and how to best prep before painting. Do not apply over tin, vinyl, or Teflon bottom paints. -
How should boat bottom paint be applied?
Apply 1-2 coats of Krypton bottom paint with a 3/16" nap roller, foam and chip brushes, or airless and convention sprayers. An extra 1-2 coats are recommended over bare substrates, at the waterline, and other areas with increased wear, such as leading edges of rudders, skegs, or struts. If needed, thin up to 10% (12 oz. per gallon) with water. -
How much antifouling paint do I need to paint my boat's hull?
We offer a boat bottom paint calculator to help you estimate how much Krypton you'll need for your project. One gallon typically covers 500 square feet and one quart covers 125 square feet. -
How long does Krypton take to dry?
Depending on the temperature, this bottom paint dries and is ready to overcoat at 1 hour (90ºF), 2 hours (70º), or 4 hours (50ºF). -
How long after applying can I launch my boat?
For best results, allow the paint to cure overnight before launching. Dry time to launch is 2 hours @ 90ºF, 4 hours @ 70ºF, and 8 hours @ 50ºF. There is no max dry time to launch, as the dual biocides remain active until the boat hits the water. -
Can I use bottom paint above the waterline?
No, Krypton is an antifouling Paint meant to be used below the waterline only. It is not a general use marine paint; it does not contain UV resistance and is an ablative finish designed to wear away with use, constantly exposing fresh biocide. -
What can I do to maximize antifouling performance?
We recommend that the bottom of the boat be checked regularly to make sure it is clean and that no growth is accumulating. The self-cleaning nature of this coating is most effective when the boat is used periodically.
