After a seven-month hiatus and a cross-country RV adventure with a brand-new crew member in tow, the Sailing Sunday family is finally back where they belong—on the water. This week’s blog celebrates their triumphant return to the boatyard, the transformation of their beloved sailboat Sunday, and the TotalBoat products that helped bring her back to superyacht standards.
From Road Trip to Refit
Ryan and Britney left Sunday high and dry while they traveled across the U.S. in their renovated RV, introducing baby Oakley to the world. But once they arrived back in Georgia, it was time to get Sunday back in sailing shape—and that meant tackling a serious list of boat projects.
“We've got a huge week, a huge couple of weeks,” Ryan says as the work begins. First on the list: shine up Sunday’s topsides.
Buff, Polish, and Protect with TotalBoat
With the hull looking weathered from months on the hard, Ryan dove into a three-step exterior treatment using TotalBoat’s complete gelcoat care system:
-
TotalBuff: This heavy-duty compound took care of oxidation and light surface scratches, prepping the surface for shine.
-
TotalShine: This marine finishing compound took Sunday’s shine to the next level. Designed to remove fine swirl marks and oxidation after compounding, TotalShine enhanced the gloss and depth of the finish while restoring the vibrant color of the gelcoat. Paired with the right polishing pad, it brought out a smooth, mirror-like surface that made Sunday look freshly detailed and ready for the season ahead.
-
Boat Wax: Sealing in all the hard work, the wax provided a protective layer that’ll keep Sunday gleaming through the season.
"It's going to protect it for the next three months," Ryan noted, as he applied the wax with careful attention to detail. The transformation was jaw-dropping—Sunday was beginning to earn her new nickname: Superyacht Sunday.
Below the Waterline: Spartan Strength
With the topsides shining, attention turned to the bottom. Over 15,000 nautical miles had taken their toll, and the hull needed a bit of love. Ryan spot-primed worn areas using TotalProtect, our high-build epoxy primer ideal for underwater use. From touching up the rudder bearing to reinforcing the iron keel, he meticulously prepared the hull for its final armor: TotalBoat Spartan Multi-Season Antifouling Paint.
Using Spartan in black, they applied not one, not two, but four coats in key areas, including the waterline, rudder, and keel. “We should be good for a few seasons now,” Ryan said, exhausted but clearly proud.
The Final Countdown to Splash Day
As final coats of antifouling dried, the couple managed a few last-minute projects—from installing a new cutless bearing to baby-proofing the stanchion tube barb that accidentally broke the day before launch. They even brought in a friend to give the engine a full check-up. With a clean bill of health and everything loaded aboard, Sunday was hoisted back into the slings.
Back on the Water (with a New Co-Captain!)
With Oakley bottle-fed and safely watching from the sidelines, Sunday splashed down at high tide. The outboard may have needed a temporary replacement, and the final touches continued right up until the last minute, but that didn’t stop the smiles.
“First time on Sunday with Oakley,” Ryan said, beaming. “It’s exciting—we’re moving!”
Welcome Back, Sailing Sunday
The combination of hard work, family teamwork, and a reliable suite of TotalBoat products brought Sunday back to life. From polish and wax to antifouling protection, the Sailing Sunday crew showed just what it takes to get back out there—and made it look (almost) easy.
We’re thrilled to be part of their journey and can’t wait to follow along as they set sail for the Bahamas.
