Life aboard a sailing vessel is equal parts adventure and upkeep. For the crew of Sailing Catalpa — an Australian family living and cruising full time — those two things have a way of colliding at the best possible moments. In their latest episode, Reunited and a Big Surprise for Bella (Ep. 489), the family is anchored off the San Blas Islands of Panama, counting down the days until eldest son Taj returns home after two months away. That's when Bella decides to take on a surprise project: a full varnish refresh of Taj's cabin before he steps back aboard.
Mold Doesn't Take a Day Off
Anyone who's spent time on a boat, especially in a warm, humid climate, knows that bare or aging wood is an open invitation for mold. Bella had already learned this firsthand after varnishing her own cabin and the boat's bathroom. The difference was undeniable. Taj's room, with its unfinished and thinning surfaces, was starting to show the telltale signs: mold creeping into the bare wood, a dull finish that needed more and more frequent wiping down.
The fix wasn't glamorous, but it was satisfying. Armed with TotalBoat Halcyon Varnish and a deadline of just a few days, Bella got to work.
The Process: Sanding, Coating, and Racing the Clock
With Taj's mattress relocated to her own room and the cabin stripped down, Bella started sanding everything back — floors, cupboard doors, trim — before laying down her first coat of Halcyon. One of the reasons the Catalpa crew reaches for Halcyon on projects like this is simple: living aboard means you're always in the space you're working on. Strong chemical fumes aren't just unpleasant, they're a real concern in a confined boat environment. Halcyon's low-odor, water-based formula makes it a practical choice for liveaboards who can't exactly step outside and wait for a garage to air out.
The other notable advantage of Halcyon speed; Halcyon's fast recoat window means you can layer up multiple coats in a single day if you time them right, which is critical when you're working against a deadline and Taj's flight lands at 7 a.m.
There were moments of doubt (Bella's own words: "There was a certain moment where I was like, I'm not going to get it done"), but coat by coat the cabin came together. The sanded floors caught the light differently, and the wood looked sealed, fresh, and cared for.

The Reveal
Taj arrived back to a boat that smelled like home and a cabin that looked brand new. And true to form, Bella and the crew decided to say nothing and just to see if he'd notice. He did eventually, and quietly, with the kind of appreciation that means more than making a big fuss.
It was a small gesture, but on a boat, a well-maintained space isn't just cosmetic. It's comfort and longevity.

Having experience with boat interiors, sanding is a dust filled, get on everything mess. I wet sand interiors. It reduces clean up and varnish contamination considerably.
