TotalBoat Ambassador Richard Honan recently emailed us to share the news of his latest self-built boat, once again completed in his basement. Richard shares some photos and his story of building Summer Wind, another Joel White design perfected by Richard, the neighbors, and TotalBoat!
Richard is no stranger to boat building down in his basement shop. He has built several boats, including an Adirondack Guide Boat that we shared with you in the past. He also won the Wooden Boat Show’s “I Built It Myself” competition for DIY boat building with another build he often sails with his brother near Honan’s home in Winthrop, Ma.
After two years of looking at boat building plans, ordering wood, fasteners and epoxy, spending many Thursday evenings and Sunday mornings building the “Summer Wind,” last week was Christening Day. Charlie, Max and their dad, Colin got to see all of the work pay off as the two boys sailed off for the first time, while their parents, Colin and Christine watched from the shore.
“Summer Wind” was painted with TotalBoat Wet Edge, Bristol Beige (interior), Off White (bottom and lower strakes), Flag Blue (gunnel). “Summer Wind” would have been painted with 100% TotalBoat Wet Edge, but there was no burgundy, which I used for the seats and rub rail. TotalBoat Marine Wood Finish was used on the mast, boom and gaff. The tiller was finished with TotalBoat Lust Varnish.
Introducing, the “Summer Wind”, Nutshell Pram, designed by Joel White.
