Bottom Painting with Calico Skies Sailing

Bill and Grace from YouTube channel, Calico Skies Sailing, have been hauled out at Cabrales Boat Yard in Penasco, Mexico for a mini refit. In today’s featured video, we get to see Calico Skies come back to life with brand new Spartan Antifouling Paint!

If you're a fan of sailing or DIY boat maintenance, then you should definitely check out the Calico Skies Sailing YouTube channel. In their latest episode, Grace and Bill take on the task of priming and painting the bottom of their 1985 Sabre 36 Sailboat.

The video starts off on a bittersweet note as the couple says goodbye to their sailing buddies, Brian, Kazza and Sierra, of Sailing SV Delos, who are embarking on a journey to cross the Pacific Ocean. Grace and Bill, however, will be staying behind to finish boat work and head back to the US.

The first order of business is to prep the boat for painting. This involves sanding down the bottom of the boat to ensure a smooth surface for the paint to adhere to. Then, they apply TotalProtect Epoxy Barrier Coat as a primer to protect the hull, rudder and keel from water intrusion and corrosion.

Once the primer has cured, they apply Spartan Antifouling Paint as the topcoat. They opt for two different colors.  They first apply two coats of Spartan in Blue before the final coats of Spartan in Black.  This allows them to easily see when the layers are worn through and it's time to reapply. The more coats you apply, the longer Spartan repels even the most aggressive foulants. In total, Bill applied six coats of bottom paint and Calico is looking shipshape!

In addition to painting the bottom of the boat, the video also showcases Grace and Bill installing a new rudder and testing the steering system. They also take the opportunity to seal the wood core of the hull where the thru hulls are with High Performance Epoxy.  This will properly seal the balsa to prevent any potential leaks and water from damaging the wood. The High Performance Epoxy has been a favorite in the boat yard, being shared around with other boat owners in the yard doing repairs.

The video beautifully showcases the strong bond within the boat and sailing community, where members are always willing to lend a helping hand to their loved ones and fellow sailors - be it for personal matters or boat-related tasks. It's heartwarming to see the spirit of camaraderie and support that runs deep within this community.  It's also a great reminder that boat maintenance is an ongoing process, and with a little bit of effort, you can keep your sailboat in great condition for years to come.  Let them know what you think of Calico’s brand new bottom look! Thanks for watching!
