Varnishing Bacon with Jimmy Diresta

As Lou rows his new TotalBoat Sport Dory off into the sunset (and into a new owner’s possession), we take you to the backwoods, upstate NY shop of another favorite maker of ours and of Lous: welcome to Jimmy Diresta’s workshop.   Jimmy is hard at work on a massive cedar slab that, as he points out, resembles a big piece of bacon. Before you lament the lack of boating in this video, consider Jimmy’s position as a mentor and friend of Louis’. Jimmy is a serious maker and internet sensation with his very popular YouTube Channel where he shares his projects and even has his own video blog – or vlog.  Jimmy is a friend of TotalBoat’s and in this video, he reaches for our TotalBoat Penetrating Epoxy and Gleam Varnish to make this custom table really glow.

This is a 13′ x 50″ x 5″ thick cedar slab that was flattened using a Stanley #8 jointer plane. This table will live partially outside under an open veranda so Jimmy used Total Boat Penetrating Epoxy on the entire slab (top and bottom and all edges) and then 5-6 coats of Total Boat Gleam 2.0 gloss Spar Varnish (His client wanted gloss finish), sanding between all coats. After this video wrapped, Jimmy sanded and sprayed the last 2 coats with https://www.rockler.com/rockler-hvlp-… giving it a more smooth glossy finish than in the last few shots in the video. Spraying Gleam? Leave it to Jimmy!

You might remember that we shared Jimmy’s video about making and varnishing the paddles he carved for the canoe he is building. We’ll stick with Jimmy and continue to share his entertaining videos with you and we hope that something a little different will strike a chord with you and maybe even encourage you to make something new and different. Enjoy!

  1. Jimmy is an artist with a BFA degree, he chooses a little different medium to create his art. We have had fun looking at his creations, and can’t wait to see what TotalBoat products he uses, and where.
