Acorn to Arabella: The Keel Timber

It was such a pleasure to host the Acorn to Arabella filmmaking boatbuilders at our Tent Sale a few weeks ago. They were perfect guests, entertaining our customers who were intrigued by their planing work and their amazing story of backyard boatbuilding. They have made excellent progress, considering there is no boat being built quite yet, however, there is no boat part more important to a wooden sailboat than the keel timber. In this episode, Alix and Steve explain all the work they have done to make this vital part as long-lasting and perfect as possible. And of course, we were thrilled to learn they are counting on a few TotalBoat products to get the job done.

This is the keel timber that will join with the lead ballast keel they poured a few episodes ago. The duo leaned on TotalFair to fill any voids in the blast keel and then on TotalBoat Danish Teak Sealer to keep the keel timber from drying and checking as it sat all winter waiting for some shaping. Ingenuity is fairly standard for Steve and Alix, and they built themselves a great system for routing the keel timber to its final thickness. Check out their video where they show you how they get it all done – and then some! Enjoy!
