Building the TotalBoat Work Skiff: The Guards

We’re finally back with Lou and the TotalBoat Work Skiff is looking very sharp with the spray rails, the inwales and the guards which have now been attached. There is plenty left to do, but each step is  that much closer to getting the skiff painted and then of course, out on the water.  In episode 29, Lou uses his pin maul hammer (a shipwright favorite) to drive the nails into the runners on the bottom of the skiff, offering some of his now famous “tips” on how to best drive the nails for perfect execution.

Attaching the guards is next and Lou has decided that adding a chamfer to the boards will add a nice touch to the finished skiff.  It’s a joy to watch Lou work and even though his method and tools are not state-of-the-art, there is plenty of art to his techniques, and we know you enjoy learning about boat building from Lou.
