Building the TotalBoat Work Skiff: TotalFair for the Fasteners


Louis Sauzedde worked hard to put the fasteners for the TotalBoat work skiff in just the right location, and at just the right depth. And now to prepare for painting the bottom and the topsides, he needs to fill every one of the screw holes so they disappear underneath the paint job that is about to follow. Using our 2-part epoxy fairing compound, Lou pushes just the right amount of TotalFair into every spot, with a special technique to be certain that he is filling every void left by the fasteners.

Mixing and preparing the 2-part fairing system is easy because, as Lou shows us, the one-to-one mixture turns green once the blue and yellow parts are equally combined. ¬†With a push and bump of Lou’s scraper, the holes disappear and a few short hours later the filler can be scraped and sanded.

  1. The construction of this skiff has been great. Lou and crew have shown a lot of trade secrets as well as what craftsmanship means. Will there be a set 0f plans and a materials list available when completed? This has been a thrill to watch and I hate to see it ended.

  2. Love this whole build, but I did see one major mistake. You never use the same putty knife or spatula to scoop out filler and catalyst from the can. You can see the yellow streaks in the can of blue catalyst and that will harden on create lumps the next time you mix some up.

    I’m hoping that Jamestown Distributors will sponsor a launching ceremony and let all your local fans know the when and where details.

  4. A great series of videos. I look forward to receiving each one in the series. But again, Lou’s lack of safety precautions amazes me. No gloves when working with epoxy? And while epoxy does sufficiently harden over night to allow it to be sanded, it typically takes days for it to fully cure. Sanding uncured epoxy is hazardous. Yet Lou chooses not to wear a respirator. Not good!

    1. We absolutely suggest that you wear a respirator and gloves when using this product and other epoxy based products. The fine dust TotalFair creates is a hazard and proper protection is advised by Jamestown Distributors.

  6. Love, Love, Love the TotalFair product. Simple half/half mix turns green when mixed completely. It’s so simple I let beginners in my shop work with it. I use this product almost exclusively for fairing and love it….BUT!!!…. DO NOT use the same knife to extract the product from the containers. Residual yellow will mix in the blue and harden in the pail. This will ruin product for the next use. I use opposite ends of a paint stirrer to extract to the mixing board. Resin and Hardnener CANNOT mix until it reaches the mixing board.
